Seed Sources

Favorite Five

These are my five favorite sources on the internet for vegetable and herb seeds.

Baker Creek Heirloom Seeds - I tend to buy most of my seeds from New England vendors as they are more likely to provide those that will do best in my climate. However, these folks in Missouri are my very favorite seed source. They have an amazing collection of rare heirloom seeds, and generally provide generous amounts relatively inexpensively. There is something about their unbridaled joy and enthusiasm for saving heirloom vegetable seeds that is positively infectious.

FedCo Seeds - This consciencious seed supply house is located in Maine. They are dedicated to sustainable growing and do not carry any GMO or treated seeds. I love reading their catalog, and heartily recommend them, particularly to intermediate, advanced, and organic growers.

Johnny's Selected Seeds - I recommend Johnny's particularly for the beginning vegetable gardener, though experienced growers will find plenty to keep them happy as well. They do their best to avoid GMO seeds, but do carry some that are treated with fungicides. They also carry far more hybrid and PVP varieties than their Maine sibling, FedCo. These varieties may be of greater interest to new gardeners as they are often easier, while more experienced gardeners often prefer heirloom and open-pollinated varieites.

Pinetree Garden Seeds - Yet another Maine seed supplier (I did warn you that I tend to buy my seed locally). Pinetree offers smaller packs of seed than many other supliers, usually at a much lower price. This budget seed store is ideal for trying new varieites to see if you like them.

Territorial Seed Company - Located in Oregon, this company tends to be a bit more expensive than some of the other sources I buy from, and occasionally has fewer seeds in the pack than I might have liked. However, the quality of the seed is excellent and they offer many varieties that are hard or impossible to find elsewhere.

Garlic

Of course there has to be a separate section just for seed garlic!

Filaree Farms - Washington. They have been growing organic garlic for over thirty years!

The Garlic Smiths - Washington. The small kid on the block, but they have treated me right over the years.

The Garlic Store - Colorado. This was one of the first places I bought seed garlic.

Gourmet Garlic Gardens - Texas. Although they have fewer strains than some others, GGG does offer sampler packs of different garlics: a great way to get started.
